Start with a Specific Search
Head to Skillful.sh's search page and type what you're looking for. Be specific: "postgresql read-only" works better than "database." "slack notifications" works better than "messaging." The more specific your query, the fewer irrelevant results you'll need to scroll past.
The search covers tool names, descriptions, and README content from 50+ aggregated directories. Even if you don't know the exact name of the tool you want, a descriptive search usually surfaces relevant options.
Filter by What Matters
Use the type filter to narrow results to MCP servers specifically (vs skills or agents). If security is a priority, set a minimum security grade of B or higher. This immediately removes tools with known dependency issues or abandoned maintenance.
Category filters help when you're browsing rather than searching. "Database," "File System," "Communication," "Cloud" and other categories let you explore what's available in each area without needing to know specific tool names.
Compare Your Top Candidates
When you've found two or three promising options, compare them side by side. Look at security grades, maintenance activity (when was the last update?), directory presence (how many curated lists include it?), and community signals (stars, downloads, contributor count).
Don't just pick the one with the most stars. A server with 200 stars but weekly updates and an A security grade is often a better choice than one with 2,000 stars but no commits in six months. Stars measure awareness, not quality.
Save and Monitor
Once you've picked a server, bookmark it to easily find it again. Set up a saved search for the same query to catch new options that appear later. The ecosystem adds new servers daily, and a better option for your use case might show up next month.
